RECOVERY ROAD

RECOVERY ROAD

By Blake Nelson

2011

Pages 310

From Inside Cover:

Madeline has a drinking problem and anger issues, so she's sent away to Spring Meadows, a rehab center in a row of rehab centers known as Recovery Road. On a weekly movie night in town she meets Stewart, who's dealing with demons of his own. It's an intense time, and the two of them come together intensely.

When Madeline gets out of rehab, she tries to get back on her feet, and waits for Stewart to join her. When he does though, it's not the ideal reunion that Madeline has dreamed of. Both of them still have serious problems. And love seems more like a question than an answer.

My Thoughts:

Once a while a book comes along, grabs you hard and shakes you up a little. The story of Maddie and her recovery is honest, harsh and heartbreaking. Recovery Road takes place over three years and is a rollar coaster of emotions. The story begins when she is most of the way through a rehab program and in a halfway house.

Maddie's life is a mess. But she gets the chance to make some changes that come with staying clean and sober. Enter Stewart, quiet and attractive-also a recovering addict. He comes along at the worst possible time and when Maddie least expects it she falls in love.

I found Maddie so easy to connect with and root for. She wasn't always likable which made her all the more real to me. Maddie has some tough choices to make. And staying sober isn't easy. The high school party scene and old friends are strong temptations.

Author Blake Nelson pulls no punches with the reality of drug and alcohol abuse. And takes a brutal look at the power of choices and the paths it can take you down.

I think this is a book that every high school and public library should have on their shelves. I would recommend this book for older teens due to the sexual content and the mature subjects it deals with. This would also be a great book for parents to read and discuss with your teens.

I appreciate Good Golly Miss Holly and her ARC Tours for giving me the opportunity to read and review this amazing book.

OH.MY.GODS.

OH.MY.GODS. By Tera Lynn Childs 2008 Pages 264 From Inside Cover: If Phoebe Castro can keep her grades up and have another stellar cross-country season, her dream of attending USC with her best friends is only a track scholarship away. She's made all her plans, so it's a complete shock when her mom announces she's marrying a mysterious stranger and moving them half way around the world-to Greece. Phoebe's stuck on a secret island in the Aegean, attending a super-exclusive Academy, where her new step father is the headmaster and the kids are anything but your average students-they are descendants of the Greek gods, superpowers included. That's right, Greek gods are no myth! If Phoebe thought high school was hard, she knows this is going to be mortal misery. Securing that scholarship seems like Phoebe's only ticket out of Greece, but training and maintaining her grades will be grueling, even without a sabotaging stepsister from Hades and a gorgeous guy-what a god!-who just might be her Achilles' heel. One thing is for sure-summoning the will to win and finding her place among the gods could be Phoebe's toughest course yet. My Thoughts: Oh.My.Gods. is a quick little page turner. A welcome break from the world of dystopia that I've been up to my eyeballs in. The story is light and fluffy. I found the characters likable with exception of the mom who I felt needed to be a little more available to her daughter. After all she just uprooted Phoebe from her home, friends and school and yet she's too busy planning her wedding to realize that her daughter is struggling with a new school, stepsister and boys. Mother aside Oh.My.Gods. was a fun story and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel Goddess Boot Camp.I bought this book used from Amazon.com and plan to donate it to Salmon Middle School Library.

THE HANDMAID'S TALES

THE HANDMAID'S TALE By Mararet Atwood 1986 Pages-311 From Inside Cover: Set in the near future, it describes life in what was once the United States, now called the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy that has acted to social unrest and a sharply declining birthrate by reverting to, and going beyond, the repressive intolerance of the original Puritans. The regime takes the Book of Genesis absolutely at its word, with bizarre consequences for the women and men of its population. The story is told through the eyes of Offred, one of the unfortunate Handmaids under the new social order. My Thoughts: Two things made me pick this book up. First it's part of a personal challenge to read 100 Classics in 5 years. This book is on the list of must reads. The second reason is the theme of the book which is dystopia which as really caught my interest lately. I seem to be reading and buying a lot of these in the past month or two. This book was written in 1986 and wasn't actually aimed for the YA audience but I think fans of the dystopia genre would enjoy Atwood's tale of the future. Offred is the main character and narrator of the story which takes place after the United States have been taken over. Society has completely changed and women no longer have value. Offred's fate is decided by the fact that she is fertile and had an affair in the past. She is a handmaid. She is to be used for reproductive purposes only. She has been placed in a commander's house to have a baby for him and his wife. If she fails to produce a baby she will be shipped off the the "colonies" where a worse fate awaits her. Right away we are dropped into Offred's new life as a Haidmaid and her new life. Through a series of flashbacks we learnof her past life that involves a husband and a little girl. Page 194: Offred praying to God: I wish I knew what you were up to. But whatever it is, help me to get through it, please. Though maybe it's not Your doing; I don't believe for a instant that what's going on out there is what You meant. I have enough daily bread, so I won't waste time on that. It isn't the main problem. The problem is getting it down without choking on it. Now we come to forgiveness. Don't worry about forgiving me right now. There are more important things. For instance: keep the others safe, if they are safe. Don't let them suffer too much. If they have to die, let it be fast. You might even provide a Heaven for them. We need you for that. Hell we can make for ourselves. I enjoyed reading The Handmaid's Tale. Margaret Atwood builds a fastinating dystopian world. Offred's tale is interesting and terrifying. I think that fans of dystopia would also enjoy reading Atwood. This book can be found at the Salmon Public Library in the Adult Section.
